Should I secure a rental before filing bankruptcy? Well this is a good question; I can personally answer this one from experience. When I filed bankruptcy I was not late on my mortgage payment as a matter of fact I was current on the payment. However I decided to give up the home; because the job that I had was unable to make the monthly payment.

When I went to speak to the attorney I told him about the situation and he stated that I had about 3 months that I could live in my current home before it would be foreclosed on. So from my personal experience you do not have to secure a rental before you file for bankruptcy.

If you have talked to some professionals and have found no other option but filing bankruptcy; then I would plan on staying in your home until you are at least 3 months behind. This will give you an opportunity to save some money so that you can move into a new home or into a new apartment.

As for the bankruptcy showing up on the credit report; I personally thought that it was going to hinder my ability to get a new apartment or in some way prevent me moving into a decent part of the neighborhood. However I told the lady at the apartment complex the situation and everything was fine. I was still able to move into the complex without having to pay a ridiculous deposit.

She told me that they do not look at that type of stuff; all they want to know is that you did not bail out on a lease in the past.
